FORMER POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT FOR CORRUPTION

Kuruman, Northern Cape – The Kuruman Regional Court has sentenced former South African Police Service (SAPS) Constable, Johannes Shuping, to six years of direct imprisonment after convicting him on two counts of corruption involving R10,000 solicited from a member of the public. The charges relate to a 2018 incident in which Shuping, then a detective at Kathu SAPS, re-arrested the complainant, Buti Moepadira, despite the case already being before the court.

COURT GRANTS CONFISCATION ORDER AGAINST CONVICTED FORMER FIELD RANGERS

Skukuza – On 5 June 2025, the Skukuza Regional Court granted a confiscation order in favour of the National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) in Mpumalanga against two convicted former field rangers, Lucky Mkanzi and Nzima Joel Sihlangu. The order compels them to pay an amount of R836,600, plus 11% interest accruing from 1 February 2019, the date of the poaching of two rhinos.

SKUKUZA POACHER SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS' IMPRISONMENT

The Skukuza Regional Court has today sentenced Philip Mfana Masuku (62), from Bhekiswayo Trust in Kabokweni, to 14 years’ direct imprisonment for poaching-related offences. He was convicted on four counts: trespassing, killing two rhinos, conspiracy to commit an offence, and possession of a dangerous weapon.

The Scottburgh Regional Court has sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment after he pleaded guilty (Section 112 Plea) to the rape of a 64-year-old woman in January 2023 in the KwaCele area.
