Councilor charged with statutory rape abandons bail
The Orkney Magistrates’ Court postponed the case against Tebogo Sepale (43), a Councillor at the Matlosana Local Municipality to 24 August 2023 for further investigations. He was due to register a formal bail application but opted to abandon it, following consultations with his attorney. The state is now awaiting the conclusion of investigations to possibly add more charges against the accused in preparation for trial.

The Madadeni Regional Court has sentenced a 46 year-old man, to two life terms of imprisonment for the rape of his nieces aged 13 and six years old. The girls in this matter are cousins, and they were raped on various occasions by the man, who lived with them in the same homestead. In 2015, he raped a 13 year-old girl on two different occasions when her granny was not around. The six year-old was raped in 2019, also when she was alone at home.

The High Court of South Africa, Eastern Cape Division, sitting in East London, sentenced former Correctional Services Official, Simphiwe Mxosa (48) to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-wife. In addition to declaring him unfit to possess a firearm, the court made an order for Mxosa’s children with the deceased and their maternal grandmother to be given psycho-social counselling and any other support by the Department of Social Development.

The Lusikisiki Regional Court sentenced four rapists to life imprisonment terms in three different cases. Nathi Chithelo (32) and Athenkosi Gcambaza (25) were sentenced for raping an 18-year-old woman, while Avela Somhlahlo (30) and Thobela Khulani (35) were respectively sentenced for raping a three-year-old boy and a mentally ill woman.
