NPA WELCOMES SENTENCE FOR SERIAL KIDNAPPER, RAPIST AND ROBBER

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the effective 25-year sentence imposed by the High Court of South Africa, Eastern Cape Division, sitting in Gqeberha, against Siphosethu Maqoma (30), who was convicted on multiple serious offences, including kidnapping, rape, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

NPA WELCOMES LIFE IMPRISONMENT SENTENCE FOR MAN CONVICTED OF RAPING HIS MOTHER

Bothaville, Free State – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the life imprisonment sentence handed down by the Bothaville Regional Court to a 23-year-old man convicted of raping his biological mother. The identity of the accused is being withheld to protect the identity and dignity of the victim. The accused was convicted on one count of rape in contravention of Section 51(1) of the Criminal Law Amendment Act. He was sentenced to life imprisonment following a successful prosecution by Regional Court Prosecutor Tshegofatso Lebitsa.

FORMER KZN HEALTH MEC PEGGY NKONYENI AND ANOTHER ACCUSED ADDED IN INTAKA HOLDINGS CASE

Peggy Yoliswa Nkonyeni (64) appeared in the Pietermaritzburg High Court today (on summons) on charges of fraud and corruption. Her appearance relates to her alleged involvement in the procurement of water purification units (Watakas) and self-generating oxygen units (Oxyntakas) for hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal during her tenure as the MEC for Health. This was from a company named Intaka Holdings which was owned by Uruguayan businessman, Dr. Gaston Savoi. As a result of misrepresentations and the manipulation of the procurement processes, Intaka Holdings benefitted over R100 million.

LIFE AND 38 YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT FOR MURDER OF A TOURIST

Mpumalanga – Breyten: The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the sentence of life plus an additional 38 years’ imprisonment, imposed by the Mpumalanga High Court sitting in Breyten on Mozambican national James Cumalo (32) for the murder of tourist John Wickham.

MAN SENTENCED TO TWO LIFE TERMS FOR RAPE

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the sentence of two life terms handed down by the Enkangala Magistrates’ Court to Innocent Mabhena (30) from Marikana, following his conviction on two counts of rape of a 21-year-old woman. He was further sentenced to three years’ direct imprisonment for kidnapping. The court ordered that the three-year sentence run concurrently with the life sentences. The court also ordered that Mabhena’s name be entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

MURDER ACCUSED SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS’ DIRECT IMPRISONMENT IN FRASERBURG

Fraserburg, Northern Cape – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) notes the sentence imposed by the Regional Court sitting in Fraserburg, where Gert Johannes (33) was sentenced to 22 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Lee Ann Mostert (21). Prosecutor Mortlan Kiewiets represented the State in this matter.

NPA WELCOMES 30-YEAR SENTENCE FOR INFANT’S MURDER IN BRUTAL GBVF ATTACK

Phillipstown, Northern Cape – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) notes and welcomes the sentence imposed by the Phillipstown Regional Court, where Samuel Pieters (24) was sentenced to 30 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of 11-month-old Aidan Booysen.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charge of murder.

The court heard that on 30 November 2024, the accused went to his girlfriend’s residence, where an argument ensued between them.
