25 years direct imprisonment for raping his granny, Ntuzuma Regional Court
The Ntuzuma Regional Court has sentenced a 22-year-old man to an effective 25 years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the housebreaking, attempted murder, and four counts of rape he committed in the Inanda area in November 2022. The complainant, his 68-year-old granny, was at her home when he broke in and assaulted her; breaking her arm, and leaving her with several injuries on her leg and face. He fled the scene and was later apprehended by his family members. The granny was taken to the Phoenix Thuthuzela Care Centre, where she received medical and psycho-social assistance.
In aggravation of sentence, the Regional Court Prosecutor, Lisa Abrahams submitted a Victim Impact Statement, compiled by the granny and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer, Senziwe Mthethwa. In her statement, the granny said that she could not believe that she was so brutally violated by her grandson. She said that she was unable to forgive him for what he had done to her. Abrahams also argued that the court should impose the minimum sentence of life imprisonment for the charges of rape. However, the court deviated from the same and found that there were substantial and compelling circumstances, such as the plea of guilt, and his age, to do so. The man was sentenced as follows: five years imprisonment for housebreaking, 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder, 25 years imprisonment each for the two counts of rape, and 15 years imprisonment each for the other two counts of rape. The sentences will run concurrently resulting in an effective 25 years imprisonment.
