MAN SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR RAPING EX-GIRLFRIEND
Schweizer-Reneke, North West – The Schweizer-Reneke Regional Court has convicted and sentenced 29-year-old Otsile William Mopalami to 14 years’ imprisonment for raping his ex-girlfriend in May 2022. The sentencing was delivered yesterday, 08 September 2025.
On 01 May 2022, Mopalami visited the victim’s parental home, demanding to see her while her parents were out visiting the township. He followed her inside, physically assaulted her, strangled her, and forced her into the bedroom, where he raped her without consent. Hearing her parents’ return, he dressed and fled through the back door. A police docket was opened, leading to his arrest.
In court, Mopalami pleaded not guilty, claiming consensual intercourse earlier that day, and denied the rape at her home. The state presented evidence from the victim and her mother, who detailed a history of abuse by the accused. In aggravation, State Prosecutor Botsang Phawe requested a harsher sentence, citing the lack of respect shown by raping her in her safe family home.
The court found compelling and substantial circumstances to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence, considering Mopalami’s personal circumstances and potential for rehabilitation, sentencing him to 14 years’ imprisonment.
Dr. Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, commended the collaborative efforts of the prosecution team, South African Police Service, and stakeholders. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to prosecuting gender-based violence (GBV) crimes, particularly against women and children. Ends.
