35-YEAR-OLD SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR MURDER OF MECHANIC
Johannesburg – The Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Peter Mogolego (35) to 20 years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the 2019 murder of 49-year-old Domingos Coster Alexander in Lombardy East.
Mogolego was arrested in 2020 after an informer, tasked with tracking him, spotted him travelling from the Eastern Cape. The informer alerted the police, providing a description of Mogolego, the taxi he was travelling in, and its registration number. This information led to his interception at a tollgate.
The case relates to an incident in which Mogolego, accompanied by an accomplice, entered the deceased’s property to forcibly retrieve a vehicle that was under repair. An argument broke out when Mogolego demanded the car keys, which escalated to him fatally shooting the deceased multiple times with a firearm. Mogolego and another suspect, who had been waiting in the getaway vehicle, fled the scene. The deceased was declared dead upon the arrival of emergency services.
Acting Regional Court Prosecutor Adolphus Mukwevho argued for a minimum 20-year sentence, highlighting the accused’s status as a repeat offender. The court duly imposed a 20-year sentence.
The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the sentence as a clear demonstration of the justice system’s commitment to holding perpetrators of violent crime accountable and ensuring justice for victims and their families.
