MAN SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT FOR MURDER
Rustenburg, North West – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the 18-year direct imprisonment sentence handed down by the Rustenburg Regional Court to Xoli Gift Malose (25) for the brutal murder of Ronald Buti Setedi (64). The court also declared Malose unfit to possess a firearm.
The conviction stems from an incident that took place on 26 August 2023, in Sunrise Park, Rustenburg. Evidence presented in court revealed that Setedi, who was intoxicated and on his way home from a local tavern, was assisted by a bystander when Malose approached them from behind and attempted to rob Setedi of his cellphone.
Setedi, who was holding a beer bottle, defended himself by grabbing Malose’s hand and striking him in the mouth with the bottle, dislodging the accused’s silver tooth. Enraged, Malose retaliated by assaulting and stabbing Setedi in the neck with the broken bottle, reportedly attempting to extract the victim’s teeth. A bystander blew a whistle in an attempt to get help, prompting the accused to flee the scene. Setedi succumbed to his injuries, and the matter was reported immediately. Malose was arrested later that day.
Malose was denied bail and pleaded not guilty to the charge. During sentencing, State Prosecutor Katlego Magano argued that Malose acted with cruelty, showed no remorse, and urged the court to impose the prescribed minimum sentence without deviation. Presiding Magistrate Thamsanqa Ngonxeka sentenced the accused to 18 years’ imprisonment.
Dr Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, welcomed the sentence and commended the work of the prosecution and investigative teams. “The NPA remains committed to ensuring accountability in murder cases and recognises the profound pain and trauma these crimes inflict on families and communities,” said Dr Makhari.
