MAN SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT FOR MURDER
Taung, North West – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the 18-year direct imprisonment sentence handed down by the Taung Regional Court to Thato Darlington Lekaowa (21), of Manokwane village, for the brutal murder of his 46-year-old maternal uncle, Jonas Othusitse Lekaowa. The conviction relates to a tragic incident that occurred on 14 February 2020, at the deceased’s home in Manokwane. An argument ensued after the accused was reprimanded by his aunt and uncle for consuming food, specifically polony, meant for school lunchboxes. This led to a violent confrontation, during which the accused stabbed his uncle in the back with a knife. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Following the incident, the accused fled the scene. A case of murder was promptly opened, resulting in his arrest. While initially granted bail, he later absconded, leading to the forfeiture of his bail to the state. He was subsequently remanded in custody, during which he persistently delayed the trial process. Despite pleading not guilty, Lekaowa was found guilty of murder based on compelling evidence presented by the prosecution. In aggravation of sentence, State Prosecutor Rebaona Mokgopa argued that the accused demonstrated a clear disregard for life and showed no remorse for his actions.
Presiding Magistrate Bhuti Zulu emphasised the seriousness of the offence and the need for the courts to act decisively against violent crime, particularly where such offences disrupt the safety and dignity of family and community life.
Welcoming the outcome, the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, commended the investigative and prosecutorial teams for their dedication in securing justice: “This sentence reaffirms the NPA’s commitment to holding perpetrators of violent crimes accountable. It sends a clear message that our courts will not tolerate senseless acts of violence, especially within families, and that justice will be served without fear or favour.” The NPA remains resolute in its constitutional mandate to prosecute without delay, fear, or prejudice and to ensure justice for victims and communities affected by crime.
