The NPA erroneously stated in a media statement distributed on 13 June 2019, that well-known Cape Town attorney and political leader, Muhammed Rashad Khan, was sentenced for tax fraud. Mr Khan has correctly pointed out that he pleaded guilty to 463 counts of failure to submit timeously income tax returns, VAT returns, PAYE returns, SDL returns, UIF, IRP 501 reconciliation statements including failure to notify SARS of any change in his business address in terms of the VAT legislation.
He was convicted and sentenced on 11 June 2019 with a fine of R200 000 or 12 months imprisonment with all the additional sentences suspended for 5 years. The NPA unconditionally apologises to Mr Khan for the erroneous report.
