The Trial Of A Traditional Healer Accused Of Rape Adjourned In The Regional Court

The trial of a traditional healer from Warrenton has been adjourned to 23 June 2022, by the Magistrates’ Court sitting in Warrenton. The 77-year-old man, who at the time of the commissioning of the crime was 76 years old, was arrested in January 2021, after the child of his client accused him of rape.

During the trial proceedings, the court heard the testimony of the complainant, on how the accused had abused her when he was visiting their home to assist her mother to train as a sangoma. The 18-year-old was 16-years-old when the alleged crimes were perpetrated against her, she told the court how these rapes affected her life as she trusted the traditional healer known as “Ntate”. 

It alleged that the traditional healer, who is known to the victim and the family, was assisting the victim's mother with the process of becoming a traditional healer when he had allegedly raped the 16-year- old teenager on two occasions while he performed rituals at the victim's home. The matter was reported to the police after the girl told her mother what had happened and the accused was arrested.
