Theft Trial Against Former North West Head Of SCCU Commences

The trial against the former Head of the Specialized Commercial Crimes Unit (SCCU), in the North West, Adv. Jeanette Nevelling (53), commenced at the Molopo Magistrate’s Court. She was arrested on 16 February 2021, on an allegation of shoplifting at a retail shop, at The Crossing Shopping Mall in Mmabatho.  She allegedly stole clothing and food items valued at approximately R3000, and she was granted R500 bail.

The state and the defence attorney have concluded leading evidence and cross-questioning, the first witness respectively. The second witness, who is security personnel where the offence allegedly occurred, has taken the stand and a recess was ordered to afford the court to go on inspection at Woolworths tomorrow, 14 June 2022. After this inspection, proceedings will commence, in court where the witness will continue giving evidence.

Meanwhile, Adv. Mashudu Mudau, from the Limpopo Division of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), is representing the state, to ensure there is no perceived conflict of interest, as Adv. Nevelling was a senior official within the North West Division. Adv. Nevelling has since resigned and effectively ceased being an NPA employee as of 30 October 2021.
