Resignation Delays Julius Malema Case

The East London Regional Court has postponed the case against the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, to Tuesday 1 March 2022, to afford the new prosecutor time to prepare.

State Adv. Joel Cesar has taken over the prosecution following the sudden resignation of Adv. Elna Smit. She has been handling the case since 2018. Malema is facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, discharge of a firearm in a built-up area and failure to take reasonable precaution to person or property and reckless endangerment to person or property.

He is charged along with security company director Adriaan Snyman. The firearm that Malema allegedly fired at an EFF rally in Mdantsane in 2018, belongs to Snyman.

This week was set aside for the trial which will now commence tomorrow on 1 March 2022.
