More Charges Added To Former Prosecutor Of Limpopo

A former prosecutor of Thohoyandou Magistrates Court, Leonard Makhado Ratshilumela (49) appeared in Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court facing charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. This follows an incident that happened on 29 March 2022, in Mukula village. Makhado and Mbofholowo Freedom Tshikovhele (27) were arrested yesterday, after allegedly attempting to kill and burn the house of a key witness. They are on trial for corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

It is alleged, that the family members of the witnesses, went out of the house after they have smelled petrol and alerted the police. In May 2020, Ratshilumela Makhado was arrested at Thavhani Mall in Thohoyandou, by the (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation) HAWKS during an undercover operation, for an alleged bribe to make the case disappear.

He demanded R6000 from the parent of the accused, who was facing charges of reckless and negligent driving. Makhado failed to appear in the Giyani Specialized Commercial Crimes Court on 28 March 2022 for trial. A warrant of arrest was issued, and the case is adjourned to 06 April 2022, to secure an available prosecutor from outside of Thohoyandou to proceed with the matter.

The National Prosecuting Authority condemns the behaviour of the former prosecutor, and it is unacceptable for someone in his position to commit such crimes. We commended the good police officer who acted accordingly.
