MAN SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR MURDER

Lichtenburg, North West – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the life imprisonment sentence handed down by the Lichtenburg Regional Court to Mokgosi Mothibi (42) of Blydeville, Lichtenburg, for the murder of 26-year-old Tebogo Mosehle. The judgment was delivered on 25 November 2025.

The conviction arises from an incident that occurred on 30 April 2023 in Blydeville. On the day of the offence, Mosehle was socialising with friends at a local house where alcohol was being consumed. A confrontation later broke out between his friends and other patrons. Mosehle and his companions then left the house. While they were walking on the road, Mothibi approached at high speed in his vehicle and struck Mosehle. He then made a U-turn and drove over him again as friends attempted to pull the victim out of the road. Mothibi continued driving towards the deceased with the intention of running him over once more, but his vehicle’s tyre got punctured, forcing him to stop. Emergency services and police were called to the scene, and Mosehle succumbed to his injuries. Mothibi was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.

During the trial, Mothibi pleaded not guilty. In aggravation of sentence, State Prosecutor Oduetse Gwai argued that the murder was premeditated and highlighted that the accused showed no remorse. Gwai urged the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence, pointing to the rise in violent crimes and the particularly brutal nature of the offence. The court concurred, finding that the accused displayed no remorse and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Welcoming the sentence, the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, commended the investigation and prosecution teams for their dedication. “We stand united in our resolve to ensure justice is served. Violent crimes will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will face the full might of the law,” said Dr Makhari. She reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that violent offenders face the full consequences of their actions.
