MAGAQA MURDER ACCUSED BACK IN COURT
Zweliphansi Stanley Skhosana made his first appearance in the Pietermaritzburg High Court today, alongside Sbonelo Myeza and Mbulelo Mpofana. The three are charged in connection with the murder of former ANC Youth League Secretary General Sindiso Jethro Magaqa. Magaqa was killed in July 2017 in Mzimkhulu. They face charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, malicious injury to property, and defeating the administration of justice (Skhosana). Today, the state advised the court that it would be bringing an application in terms of Section 73 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Act with regard to the legal representation of Accused 2, Myeza.
The legal representative had previously represented a co-accused in this matter, namely Sibusiso Ncengwa. Ncengwa made Section 220 admissions (in this matter) in July this year. He was subsequently sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment and will now testify as a state witness. The state is of the view that the continuous participation of the legal representative in this matter is a conflict of interest, which may result in an irregularity.
The matter was adjourned to 06 November 2025 for the application to be heard.
