LIFE SENTENCE FOR RAPE OF DAUGHTER

The Nquthu Regional Court has sentenced a 41-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of his daughter in the Mondlo area in July 2022. The complainant was five years old at the time. The accused and the complainant lived alone together as the complainant’s mother did not live with them.

On the evening of the incident, the accused raped the complainant and then told her not to tell anyone what he had done. When the complainant’s mother returned to the area some months later, the neighbours informed her about the rumours that the complainant had been raped by the accused. She asked the complainant about this, and the complainant confirmed the rape. The matter was reported to the police, and the complainant was taken to a medical doctor for an examination.

In court, Prosecutor Bongispho Smangaliso Msebe Mthembu led the evidence of the complainant and the first report (her mother). The doctor who had examined the complainant testified that she had scars on her private parts, confirming that she had been sexually violated. In addition to the life sentence, the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm, and the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the life sentence handed down. Cases such as this underscore the NPA’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served, particularly in cases involving crimes against the most vulnerable members of our society, our children.
