Life imprisonment for a rapist, Madadeni Regional Court

Life imprisonment for a rapist, Madadeni Regional Court

The Madadeni Regional Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man today to life imprisonment for the rape of a girl in May and June 2021. The girl was 11 years old at the time and the man was friends with her older brother. He would visit their home to either smoke or watch TV with her brother. The child slept on a mattress on the floor of the rondavel where they watched TV and he raped her when her brother was asleep. He went into hiding after the matter was reported to the police and was eventually arrested on a warrant of arrest. The girl was taken to the  Madadeni Thuthuzela Care Centre, where she received medical and psycho-social assistance.

In court, the Regional Court Prosecutor, Zwelisha Petros Mhlophe handed in a Victim Impact Statement compiled by the child’s guardian and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer, Masande Mdiya. In her statement the woman said that the incident has traumatised the child and she refuses to go outside or to interact with other children. She said that she had to leave her job to stay at home and take care of the child who was fearful all the time.

The man was sentenced to life imprisonment and the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm. The court further ordered that his name is added to the National Register for Sex Offenders, and the court further found him unsuitable to work with children.

The NPA welcomes this successful prosecution and commends the work done by both the prosecution and the investigation team.
