LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR MAN WHO RAPED HIS OWN MOTHER

Bloemfontein, Free State – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Free State welcomes the sentence of life imprisonment imposed on Lebogang Kolokotoane (34) by the Sexual Offences Court in Bloemfontein for the rape of his 56-year-old mother, as well as for a separate rape and robbery committed in 2015.

The court found that in June 2023, the complainant, who is the accused’s biological mother, was asleep at her home when she woke up to find her son undressing and raping her. She managed to escape and sought help from a neighbour, who assisted her in reporting the matter to the police. A DNA report later confirmed that the accused was positively linked to the rape. The same forensic report also connected him to a cold case dating back to April 2015, in which a woman was attacked by three unknown men while walking home. The men robbed her of her cellphone, a pair of Adidas takkies, and R400 in cash. Two of the men, including Kolokotoane, also raped the victim. The complainant was unable to identify her attackers at the time, and the case remained unsolved until the 2023 DNA match.

Following the latest forensic findings, Kolokotoane was charged with both rape cases and robbery. On 21 October 2025, the court sentenced him as follows: Rape (of his mother): Life imprisonment, Rape (2015 victim): Life imprisonment and Robbery: 15 years’ imprisonment. The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, resulting in an effective term of life imprisonment.

During sentencing, Regional Court Prosecutor Mpho Motloung argued that the accused posed a grave danger to society, emphasising that he not only violated and terrorised his own mother but also inflicted harm on another woman years earlier. Motloung urged the court to impose the maximum sentence, stating that such punishment was the only fitting response to his heinous and deplorable crimes.

The NPA commends the diligent work of the prosecution and law enforcement in securing this conviction, underscoring its unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for victims of sexual violence and protecting vulnerable members of society. All cases of sexual violence infringe upon the rights to dignity and privacy of victims as enshrined in the Constitution; therefore, the NPA vigorously prosecutes these offences to uphold justice and safeguard the most vulnerable.
