LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR MAN WHO RAPED ELDERLY WOMAN
A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Nquthu Regional Court following his conviction for the rape of a 61-year-old woman in the Mondlo area in May 2024.
On the evening of the offence the complainant had been in her garden and when she returned to her house, she found the accused inside. He threatened her with a knife and instructed her to lock the door. He then took her into the bedroom where he raped her for some time. During the attack, the complainant recognised him as someone from a neighbouring house, however she did not say anything as she feared that he might kill her. The accused then fled the scene. Thereafter, the complainant reported the incident to her daughter. When the complainant’s daughter approached the accused’s brother about what had happened, the accused and his brother tried to mediate the matter.
They approached the complainant with a compensation letter, signed by the accused. However, the complainant reported the matter to the police, thus leading to the arrest of the accused.
Representing the state, Prosecutor Dan Motha told the court that the complainant was attacked within the sanctity of her home. He said that the complainant has suffered emotional and psychological scars because of the incident. The accused was convicted and sentenced accordingly. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The NPA welcomes the conviction and sentence, especially as South Africa commemorates the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. We hope that sentences of this nature reaffirm the NPA’s unwavering pursuit of justice.
