JUDGMENT RESERVED IN THE TRIAL OF MAN ACCUSED OF MURDERING SANDTON TEACHER

The Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg has reserved judgment in the trial of Bafana Mahungela (23), who is charged with the kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, and attempted rape of Sandton teacher Kirsten Kluyts.

The charges arise from an incident that allegedly occurred in Sandton on 29 October 2023. Mahungela has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Both the State and the defence have closed their cases, and the matter has now reached its final stage following the presentation of all evidence and legal arguments before the court.

The court today partially delivered its judgment and postponed the matter to 11 September 2026 for the final judgment to be handed down.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) notes the court's decision and respects the judicial process. The NPA remains confident in the evidence presented before the court and will continue to uphold the interests of justice in the pursuit of accountability.

The NPA further acknowledges the public interest in this matter and remains committed to ensuring that the legal process proceeds fairly, impartially, and in accordance with the rule of law.
