HUSBAND SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS’ DIRECT IMPRISONMENT FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ASSAULT
Kimberley, Northern Cape – The Kimberley Regional Court has convicted and sentenced Collin Mahooa (39) to 10 years’ direct imprisonment for Assault with Intent to Cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), read with Section 1 of the Domestic Violence Act and Section 51(2) Part 3 of Section 2 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act 105 of 1977.
On 20 January 2025, in Roodepan township outside Kimberley, Mahooa violently attacked his wife, assaulting her with fists and strangling her. The victim immediately reported the incident to the South African Police Service (SAPS), leading to his swift arrest and prosecution. Presented with strong and overwhelming evidence led by Prosecutor Mpho Khonkhobe, the accused pleaded guilty.
Despite this, the court imposed a severe sentence of 10 years’ direct imprisonment, underscoring the judiciary’s commitment to treating domestic violence as a serious and unforgivable offence. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) reaffirmed its unwavering stance against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). “Pleading guilty does not absolve perpetrators from accountability. The NPA will persistently and relentlessly pursue justice to protect victims and ensure offenders are duly sentenced. Guided by initiatives such as the 365 Days of Activism Against GBVF, we will prosecute these matters vigorously and without fear, favour, or prejudice,” said Advocate Keageletse Ilanga, Chief Prosecutor responsible for the Kimberley Cluster in the Northern Cape Division of the NPA.
The NPA remains committed to supporting survivors of domestic violence and ensuring that perpetrators face the full might of the law. The Authority continues to prosecute hundreds of similar cases daily across the country, protecting vulnerable community members and restoring dignity to victims of crime.
