Former Senior Police Officer Convicted Of Fraud

A former member of the South African Police Services, Johan Frederic Colonel(62), has been found guilty and convicted by the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court.  The accused, a former Lieutenant Colonel, was charged with submitting fraudulent travel claims, while he was still serving in the South African Police Service. In 2019, the accused was supposed to attend a work-related workshop in Pretoria, but the session was postponed before the accused could travel.

The accused later submitted travel claims of more than three thousand rands, substantiated as those of the workshop, even though he was aware that he never travelled to attend the workshop.

After making numerous court appearances, the accused was found guilty after pleading guilty to the charges against him.

He was sentenced to a fine of R10000 or twelve months imprisonment, which was suspended for five years, on the condition that the accused is not found guilty during the time of suspension. He was further instructed to reimburse the South African Police Services for the money amounting to more than three thousand rands.
