Ex-Convict And Serial Cash-In-Transit Kingpin Sentenced For Similar Offence In Mpumalanga

The Mpumalanga High Court sitting in Graskop has today sentenced Lehlonolo Tleketle (48), from Cosmo City Randburg to 28 years imprisonment, for robbing the cash delivery truck(SBV) an amount of over R14 million. Tleketle committed this offence after he was granted bail in Gauteng, for a similar offence for which he is currently serving 30 years imprisonment for it.

On 24 July 2017, Tleketle together with his unknown accomplices travelled in four vehicles on the Sabie/ Lydenburg road, where they approached four security guards in the truck and fired shots with firearms. They disarmed the security guards and instructed them to open the safe door. They used explosives, blast the safe door open and robbed them of an amount of over R14 million. The group abandoned the vehicle Tleketle was travelling in on the road to the Sudwala curves and fled the scene.

The accused was linked to the crime through DNA, which was the bloodstains retrieved from the motor vehicle he was driving. In court, he pleaded guilty to four counts of attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawfully pointing of firearm, malicious damage to property, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition and possession of explosives. The court ordered that the sentences in counts 1,4,5,6,7,9 and 10 run concurrently, and the effective sentence is 28 years of direct imprisonment. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Mr Ntuli, commends the collaborative effort of the investigating officer and Adv Thulani Msibi for the job well done. He said, “the crime of robbery with aggravating circumstances committed against cash-in-transit vehicles is a scourge in the South African society which should be brought to an end”.
