Double Life Sentence For Murderers

The Ntuzuma Regional Court sentenced Nkosinathi Hlongwane (28) and Nkosinathi Njabulo Khumalo (25), to two terms of life imprisonment for the murders they committed in February 2020, in the KwaMashu area. Hlongwane was sentenced to a further 10 years imprisonment, for having an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. On the day of the incident, the deceased persons, Mjabuliseni Mpungose (43) and Sabelo Joseph Mpungose(56) were seated outside the KwaMashu men’s hostel, when Hlongwane and Khumalo opened fire on them. The men then fled the scene but were arrested later that day.

In court, Regional Court Prosecutor Kaystree Ramsamujh led witness testimonies as well as ballistic evidence and an identity parade. Ramsamujh also handed in a Victim Impact Statement, compiled by one of the deceased's sisters and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer, Princess Mhlangeni. In her statement, the woman said that she missed her brother. He was the breadwinner of their family, and his death left them devastated. The sentences will run concurrently, the men will serve an effective sentence of life imprisonment.

The NPA welcomes the finalisation of this matter and commends the work done by the Prosecutor and the Investigating team.
