BLOEMFONTEIN MAN RECEIVES LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPING THE FRIEND OF HIS SON

Bloemfontein, Free State – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) reaffirms its commitment to combating gender-based violence (GBV) following the life imprisonment sentence imposed on Tebogo Makhanya (43) by the Bloemfontein Sexual Offences Court. Makhanya was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl, a friend of his son, in March 2023. He lured her to his home under the pretext of discussing an issue involving his son, then raped her twice. Afterwards, he took her to an open field, showed her a large hole, and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident. The victim courageously reported the matter in November 2023.

Prosecutor Valerie Herholdt argued during sentencing that a clear message must be sent: the justice system will not tolerate such crimes, and perpetrators will face the full force of the law. The court found Makhanya guilty and imposed life imprisonment. The NPA commends the victim’s bravery and resilience. This sentence warns that violence against women and children will be met with severe punishment.

The NPA remains dedicated to ensuring safe communities and justice for GBV victims. Each successful prosecution reflects months to years of diligent investigative and prosecutorial work, mirroring hundreds of similar cases resolved daily. Ends
