22 YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPING A 14-YEAR-OLD CHILD
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the sentencing of 27-year-old Jason Galant to 22 years’ direct imprisonment by the Calvinia Regional Court for raping a 14-year-old child.
The court also ordered that Galant’s name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and declared him unfit to work with children and to possess a firearm.
The court heard that on 28 August 2023, the child was asleep at her friend’s house when Galant entered and raped her. Evidence indicated that she was under the influence of alcohol and unaware of the assault at the time. DNA evidence positively linked Galant to the offence.
In aggravation of sentence, prosecutor Mortlan Kiewiets emphasised the seriousness of the offence and the need to protect women and children from sexual violence. He urged the court to impose a substantial sentence reflecting the gravity of the crime.
The NPA acknowledges Court Preparation Officer Marjorie De Wee, who prepared the witnesses to testify and explained the court process, helping them participate in the proceedings with greater confidence.
This sentence holds Galant accountable and reinforces the message that sexual violence against children carries severe consequences. The NPA remains committed to prioritising prosecutions of gender-based violence and femicide, pursuing justice for victims and ensuring that perpetrators face appropriate sentences.
The NPA calls on communities to report sexual offences, protect children and support victims throughout the justice process. It will continue to prosecute without fear, favour or prejudice.
