15-YEAR SENTENCE FOR MAN CONVICTED OF BRUTALLY KILLING HIS GIRLFRIEND

The Kimberley Regional Court has sentenced Charles Denzil Kammies (37) to 15 years direct imprisonment after finding him guilty of the brutal murder of his 21-year-old girlfriend, Linda Moreen. The incident took place on 5 March 2017 in Greenpoint, Kimberley. On that day, the couple had been consuming alcohol at a local tavern. When Moreen left the tavern without informing Kammies, he returned to their shared home alone. She arrived home in the early hours of the following morning with a friend. After the friend departed, Kammies launched a violent and sustained assault on her, strangling her, kicking her repeatedly, and striking her with his fists.

Her lifeless body was discovered the next morning by the accused’s mother. A post-mortem report submitted to the court confirmed that blunt force trauma was the cause of death, describing the injuries as consistent with a prolonged and violent attack. Although the trial faced delays due to issues with DNA evidence, it finally commenced in January 2025.

During proceedings, Regional Court Prosecutor, Mothelesi Katlego Thothela led compelling circumstantial evidence. Under cross-examination, the accused admitted to being responsible for Moreen’s death, leading the court to conclude that the State had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

In aggravation of sentence, the prosecution empathised the seriousness of gender-based violence (GBV) and urged the court to impose a sentence that sends a strong message that violence against women, particularly by intimate partners, will not be tolerated. The court concurred and sentenced Kammies to 15 years direct imprisonment.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) remains steadfast in its commitment to fighting GBV and ensuring that justice is served for victims. This conviction reaffirms the NPA’s dedication to holding perpetrators accountable and promoting safer communities.
