RAPIST GETS LIFE IMPRISONMENT

The Scottburgh Regional Court has sentenced a 58-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of a minor boy (on diverse occasions) between the years 2021 and 2022. The accused and the complainant were well known to each other as they were neighbours. The complainant was 12 years old when the offences began.

The first incident occurred when the accused called the complainant to his room. He held a knife to the complainant's neck and forced him to smoke a mixture of cannabis and tobacco. The complainant then fell asleep, and when he woke up, he realised that he had been raped by the accused. The accused gave him some money and told him to return the following day. The accused further threatened to kill him if he told anyone what had happened. While the complainant did not return the following day, the accused raped him on two further occasions. On one of these occasions as well, the accused forced the complainant to smoke cannabis and threatened to kill him if he reported the incident.

The matter eventually came to light when the complainant confided in a social worker at school. The social worker then took the complainant to the Port Shepstone Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC), where he received the necessary medico-legal assistance. In court, prosecutor Thanusha Govender led the evidence of the complainant, a social worker, the complainant’s mother, and the medical doctor. In his evidence, the complainant said that the incident has traumatised him and he is the laughingstock of the community because everyone talks about him. The accused was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and declared unfit to possess a firearm. The court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and the Child Protection Register.

The NPA’s fight against the scourge of sexual violence has been aided by the expansion of the TCC footprint across the country, which has grown from 55 TCCs in 2020/2021 to 66 TCCs at present. These centres provide comprehensive services and support to victims of sexual violence.
