The Corruption Trial Of Zandile Gumede And Others Is Set Down To Begin Next Week
The matter of S v Zandile Gumede and 21 others, (including persons and companies) will return to the Durban High Court next week, on 18 July 2022, where the trial is set to begin. The accused in this matter, are an array of eThekwini Municipality officials (current and past), ward councillors, business people and their companies. The State alleges that eThekwini officials, including the city manager and ex-mayor, circumvented the Supply Chain Management processes, for a Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender, for the benefit of identified service providers for over R300 million.
These officials profited from the deviation, and they face charges of conspiracy to commit corruption, corruption, fraud, money laundering, and Contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act, among others.
