HILLBROW ROBBER SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR ROBBING A POLICE OFFICER

Johannesburg – Oupa Johannes Dunn (44) has been sentenced to 15 years' direct imprisonment by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court for robbery with aggravating circumstances, following an incident in Hillbrow. On 30 April 2024, the complainant, an off-duty police officer, was walking from a takeaway restaurant around midnightwhen three men approached him from behind. Pretending to stop a vehicle, they forced him to the ground. One assailant brandished a firearm while the others searched the officer and stole his wallet containing bank cards, police badge, police appointment card, and cellphone.

Unaware that the victim was armed, the suspects fled. The officer drew his firearm, identified himself, and ordered them to stop and return the stolen items. They ignored him, prompting the officer to open fire, striking Dunn in the waist. Dunn attempted to hide under a stationary minibus but was apprehended when the officer stopped a passing SAPS patrol vehicle. The arrest was made on the scene.

In aggravation, Prosecutor Thomas Ngobeni noted that Dunn had shown no remorse and had failed to cooperate with authorities by withholding the identities and whereabouts of his co-accused, who remain at large. The court agreed, highlighting that the stolen police badge and appointment card could have been used to commit further crimes, posing an ongoing threat to public safety.

The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the sentence, which underscores the seriousness of violent crime and the court’s commitment to protecting law enforcement officers and the public.
