NPA WELCOMES 20-YEAR SENTENCE FOR MURDER

LOUIS TRICHARDT - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the sentence of 20 years' direct imprisonment imposed by the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Pfunzo Ramaano (23) following his murder conviction.

The court heard that on 24 December 2025, the deceased, Miyahabo Mohomi (20), was attending a party when Ramaano confronted him, accusing him of assaulting his younger brother. Despite the deceased denying the allegation, the accused assaulted him. When Mohomi attempted to flee, Ramaano pursued him, caught him, and stabbed him in the chest, leaving him critically injured and bleeding.

Following the attack, Ramaano returned to the party carrying a knife and without his T-shirt, reportedly boasting that he "kills for blood".

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, the State secured a conviction after presenting testimony from witnesses who corroborated the events leading to the fatal stabbing.

During sentencing proceedings, the State, represented by Prosecutor Tshepo Ramalamula, led evidence in aggravation of sentence from the deceased's father. He testified about the profound impact of the loss on the family and told the court that his son aspired to becoming a lawyer.

In handing down sentence, the court found that the accused showed no remorse for his actions and that no substantial and compelling circumstances warranted a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence.

The successful prosecution was the result of the diligent work of Sergeant ND Mulaudzi of the Tshilwavhusiku SAPS, whose investigation contributed to securing justice for the victim and his family.

The NPA remains committed to ensuring accountability for violent crimes and will continue to pursue appropriate sentences for offenders who commit acts of serious violence against members of our communities.
