EDENBURG REGIONAL COURT SENTENCES MAN TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPE AND BRUTAL ASSAULT OF LIFE PARTNER

Edenburg, Free State – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the life sentence imposed by the Edenburg Regional Court on 47-year-old Thami Mhlotshane for the rape and brutal assault of his 21-year-old life partner. The sentence follows a harrowing trial that exposed the extreme violence and degradation inflicted on the complainant.

The court heard that on 14 November 2025, Mhlotshane accused the complainant of being unfaithful, resulting in a violent confrontation. He forced her to accompany him into town and instructed her to "sell herself" to other men. When no one agreed to engage with her, they returned home, where he again confronted her. His conduct subsequently escalated into a horrific and brutal sexual assault.

During the attack, Mhlotshane inserted his hand and part of his forearm into the complainant's private parts, causing extensive internal injuries. The complainant immediately reported the incident to her mother and was subsequently taken for a medical examination. A medical doctor who testified during the trial confirmed that the injuries sustained were consistent with penetration by an object such as a forearm, underscoring the severity and brutality of the attack.

The complainant was visibly traumatised while testifying before the court.

The State, led by Prosecutor Leon Ehlers, presented compelling evidence demonstrating not only the severe physical injuries inflicted on the complainant but also the profound emotional and psychological impact of the ordeal.

During sentencing proceedings, Prosecutor Ehlers argued strongly for the imposition of life imprisonment, submitting that the accused had displayed extreme brutality and a complete lack of remorse. He further argued that Mhlotshane had abused the trust inherent in their relationship and subjected a person he was supposed to love and protect to inhumane and degrading treatment.

In delivering sentence, the court found that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances to justify a lesser sentence. The court concluded that the seriousness of the offence, the extreme violence employed, the abuse of trust and power, and the lasting trauma suffered by the complainant warranted the prescribed sentence of life imprisonment.

The NPA welcomes the court's decision to impose a sentence that reflects the gravity of the offences and the devastating impact that gender-based violence continues to have on victims, families, and communities.

This sentence sends a strong message that perpetrators of gender-based violence will be held accountable for their actions and will face the full might of the law.

The NPA remains resolute in its commitment to combating gender-based violence and femicide through effective prosecutions and victim-centred interventions. We will continue to pursue such cases relentlessly, ensuring that victims and survivors receive justice while perpetrators are prosecuted vigorously and, where convicted, receive sentences that reflect the seriousness of their crimes.

This successful prosecution further demonstrates the criminal justice system's determination to protect vulnerable members of society and to ensure that violence against women is met with severe consequences.
