DUO IN VIRAL VIDEO DENIED BAIL
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has successfully opposed the bail application of Zanoxolo Disemba (23) and Sinethmba Nanana (35), who are facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and robbery with aggravating circumstances. The charges stem from an incident that took place on 13 November 2024 at approximately 13h00 in Walmer Location, Gqeberha. It is alleged that the duo shot and killed Dumisani Yona (43) in broad daylight while he was hugging a schoolgirl in the middle of the street. Yona was a taxi operator who was also allegedly collecting protection fees. The incident was captured on surveillance footage from a nearby safe haven equipped with CCTV cameras.
According to eyewitness accounts and video footage, after Yona was shot, both he and the schoolgirl fell to the ground. The suspects then searched Yona, took his cellphone, and fled the scene. The schoolgirl was unharmed and ran from the area in shock. Disemba was arrested on 08 April 2025 in Walmer, while Nanana was apprehended on 16 May 2025 in Kenton-on-Sea. Disemba has a pending rape case for which he had a warrant of arrest issued for evading trial. Nanana also has a pending matter of illegal possession of a firearm.
During the bail hearing, District Court Prosecutor Asavela Vika argued that bail should be denied due to the serious nature of the offence, the fact that the murder occurred in a public space and involved a minor, and the concern that the accused do not have fixed addresses, making them difficult to trace. She further stated that they pose a flight risk, may commit further crimes, and are a danger to both the public and themselves, given their alleged involvement with a rival group also collecting protection fees. The court agreed with the prosecution and denied bail.
The case has been remanded to 28 August 2025 for further investigations, including the submission of the ballistic reports and enhanced video footage.
