Theft Case Against Former North West Head Of Sccu Set For Trial In April

The Molopo Magistrates Court set the trial date to 06 April 2022, on the theft case against the former Head of Special Commercial Crimes Unit (SCCU) in the North West, Adv. Jeanette Nevelling (53). She was arrested on 16 February 2021, on an allegation of shoplifting at a retail shop at The Crossing Shopping Mall in Mmabatho. She allegedly stole clothing and food items valued at approximately R3000 and her R500 bail was extended until the next court appearance.

Nevelling trial was scheduled to start today Monday 28 March 2022, however, the state requested for a postponement to at least set a three-day schedule that would expedite the trial. The postponement was granted, however, the defence attorney objected to a three-day schedule being set, citing that they have requested more footage from the security company contracted by Woolworth before any dates can be agreed on.

The state has however long provided the defence attorney with the charge sheet as well as the video footage contained as evidence. The court then granted 06 April 2022, for trial to start and for a three-day schedule to be agreed upon. Meanwhile, Adv. Mashudu Mudau has been appointed from the Limpopo Division of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to ensure there is no perceived conflict of interest, as Adv. Nevelling was a senior official within the division.

Adv. Nevelling has since resigned and effectively ceased being an NPA employee on 30 October 2021.
