LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPIST
The Ulundi Regional Court has sentenced a 43-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of a 20-year-old woman in December 2022 in the Ezimfabeni area. On the day of the incident, the complainant was on her way to her child's paternal homestead.
She alighted from the taxi at a stop which was next to where the accused lived. The accused saw her getting off the taxi and followed her (unbeknownst to her). At some stage, he accosted her and took her to a nearby homestead where he undressed her and raped her on more than one occasion. He then asked her to get dressed and took her to her destination (her child’s paternal homestead). There, she reported that the accused had raped her. The accused parents, as well as the elders from the community, were called. The accused managed to flee the area and was arrested five months later.
In the state’s case, prosecutor Xolani Bhekisisa Ndlela handed in a Victim Impact Statement compiled by the complainant and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Amanda Pretty Nxumalo.
In her statement, the complainant said that the incident has left an indelible mark on her. She said that she still experiences flashbacks and is afraid to go anywhere alone. Further, the incident has hurt her relationship with her child's father. The accused was sentenced accordingly, with the court declaring him unfit to possess a firearm. Further, the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The NPA welcomes the successful finalisation of this matter. Curbing the scourge of gender-based violence remains one of the organisation’s top priorities.
