41-Year-old Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Rape

41-YEAR-OLD MAN SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPE

The Germiston Magistrates’ Court sentenced a 41-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a four-year-old minor. The accused was a tenant that rented a room at the complainant’s place of residence. On 24 September 2019, while the complainant was playing in the yard, the accused came up to her and promised to let her use his phone to play games. He proceeded to take the complainant to the room. When they entered the room, he then undressed the minor and penetrated her. The child left the room of the accused and met with her mother who noticed that her trousers were wet and upon further inquiry, the child told her mother what the accused had done to her. The South African Police Services (SAPS) were called to the scene, and this led to his arrest.

During the trial, the state led evidence of a medical doctor who highlighted findings of the genital injuries the victim sustained. Further evidence from the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team revealed a match between the accused’s DNA and the genital swabs taken by the medical practitioner, as well as the analysis from child’s underwear that was seized during the medical examination.

The NPA welcomes the sentence and applauds Regional Court Prosecutor, Koketso Madiba and Investigating Officer, Sergeant Vhengani Siphuma for ensuring that the accused is sentenced to life sentence for this horrendous crime. The sentence serves to send a stern message that our courts will show no mercy to those that commit atrocious crimes against children.
