LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR FEMICIDE

The Ladysmith Regional Court has sentenced Sizwe Jabulani Miya (30) to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Zibuyile Dlamini (25), in January 2023 in the Bergville area. On 02 January 2023, Miya, who worked in Johannesburg, arrived at his house in Bergville. He told his father that he was going to kill his wife (Dlamini), however, his father did not take notice of his comment, as he thought that Miya was intoxicated. Then Miya’s nephew and others who were in the house heard Miya and Dlamini arguing in the bedroom. Miya emerged from the bedroom holding a belt, and he told his nephew and the others to leave the house. The next morning, Dlamini was found dead in a pool of blood by one of the children whom Dlamini had chased out of the house. Miya fled the area and was on the run for a year, until he was eventually arrested at his place of employment in Johannesburg.

Representing the state, Prosecutor Snethemba Hlongwane advised the court that Dlamini had suffered multiple stab wounds, lacerations, and bruises all over her body. Ms. Hlongwane appealed to the court to impose a term of life imprisonment as the crime of femicide is a serious and prevalent one. Miya was sentenced accordingly and declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The NPA remains committed to our fight against gender-based violence and femicide. There is no place in our society for perpetrators of such cruelty. We will continue to prioritise these cases and ensure that justice is delivered swiftly and decisively.
