Former police officer appears in court for corruption
A 39-year-old man, sergeant Tawana Daniel Masetla stationed at the Sebayeng Police Station has appeared in Mankweng Magistrates'Court for corruption.
It is alleged that on 11 October 2023, members of the Limpopo Anti-Corruption Unit (SAPS) received information that a police sergeant stationed at Sebayeng has solicited a bribe of R1000,00 from the family member of an accused who was arrested on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, in exchange for facilitation of the withdrawal of the matter. He then proceeded to convince the complainant to file a withdrawal statement.
The complainant was instructed to bring the money (R1000,00) to the Mankweng Magistrate Court, where the accused will be making his first appearance. The unit then obtained a Section 252A ( trap) and set the arrest in motion. The accused arrived at the court building and the complainant accompanied by members of the Anti-Corruption Unit announced his arrival and confirmed possession of the agreed amount. The accused then instructed the complainant to place the money in the door panel which he proceeded to do. After closing the door, the accused was then arrested and detained.
The matter is postponed to 19 October 2023 for bail hearing. The suspect will remain in custody.
