Young Man Gets 20 Years For Rape And Murder Of An Elderly Woman

BLOEMFONTEIN: The Thaba Nchu Magistrates’ Court has earlier today sentenced Omphile Sesing (19) to an effective 20 years imprisonment, after he pleaded guilty to rape and murder of a 69-year-old woman Mapule Masoa, in September 2020.  In his plea, Sesing stated that on 14 September 2020, he went to Masoa`s house and raped her. Masoa woke up to find Sesing busy raping her and tried to fight him off. The Accused took a knife and stabbed the victim twice in her neck and later died from her injuries.

Sesing then dug a shallow grave next to the toilet and buried Masoa. On 17 September 2020, neighbours saw flies around the grave and ordered him to dig up whatever he buried there. The neighbours called the police when they discover a human body. Sesing admitted that he raped and killed the heavily intoxicated deceased and was in no position to consent to sexual intercourse. He further admitted that he buried the body of the deceased to conceal her death.

State Prosecutor Adv Tholoana Sekhonyana, told the court that the prosecution, investigating officer, accused lawyer, and the deceased’s family have accepted the plea of guilty considering that he played open cards with the state and showed remorse.

Magistrate Magda Jacobs,  accepted the plea and sentence agreement because the accused accepted all the elements of the crime and sentenced Sesing to an effective 20 years imprisonment and ordered the sentences to run concurrently.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) lauded the investigating officer in the case, who collected the evidence, resulting in the accused having no other option but to admit guilt.
